Zukers trolling feathers work so well that almost every boat has them on board. The effectiveness lies in the way fish see them as they zoom across the water's surface. Ideally, due to the hydrodynamic shaped head design they are meant to be trolled fast at about 10-15 knots. They are effective for many species of fish but especially tuna.
Rigging Zuker Tuna Feathers
The purpose of the sinker isn't just as a spacer, but to relieve the top of the hook from the pressure of the lure, which causes the hook to cock to the side. Beads won't allieviate the pressure--they'll just transfer it from the lure to the hook, rather than have the lure press on the hook directly.
- Hook: Mustad 7691 DT Southern Tuna Hook - typically 7/0 should work for the standard size Zuker Tuna Feathers.
- Leader: Jinkai 150lb Mono (you could probably get away with 200, but certainly save the 300 for larger lures) Be sure to check this light stuff for abrasion regularly, and after any large fish.
- Knot: Consider snelling rather than crimping--fewer chances for something to go wrong (nicked leader, bad crimp, etc.). Just crimp a 1/4 or 1/2 oz. egg sinker onto the leader above the hook, so the lure rests on the sinker and not the hook eye (which causes the hook to cock sideways).
