In the 70’s the average bass casting rod was about 5 ½’ long and had a short pistol grip style handle. By the mid 80’s a technique called “Flippin” became the rage and required a rod much longer to effectively master this technique. It wasn’t long before every competitive bass angler had a least one Flipping style rod of at least 7 ½’ in his boat. Since that time the average length of bass rods has been getting longer and longer, today the average bass rod is well over 7’. An 8’ limit became the competition standard in the late 70’s but that is all about to change and for good reason.

As anglers look to improve their techniques and find ways to succeed in the big money sport of professional Bass fishing, rod length has become a very hot topic. Eagle Claw/Wright & McGill Pro Skeet Reese has led the charge in this regard and played a key role in B.A.S.S. changing the rules allowing rods up to 10’ long being allowed for use in competition starting in 2017.

With this rule change, manufactures will be scrambling to earn their share of the long rod market but Eagle Claw/Wright & McGill is already leading the way and is ready to introduce 6 new competitive models within their Skeet Reese Tournament Series of rods. Working hand in hand with Skeet, we have designed and tested each of the six new models to ensure they meet the needs and requirements of the most demanding Bass anglers and will function flawlessly under tournament conditions while providing a competitive advantage by design.

Skeet played a critical role in the design of each model and was determined to bring to anglers everywhere an assortment of rods that weren’t just longer, but longer by design and with a purpose. Each length and action was designed to give anglers a competitive advantage in demanding conditions. The use of our proprietary Pro Carbon and S-Curve blank technology has allowed us to build long, powerful yet lightweight rods that would not fatigue an angler during a long day on the water. In addition, in order to provide better balance and rod control with rods reaching the 10’ length, we’ve added engineered counter balance weights in the butt of the rod to reduce realized tip weight and make casting easier. Every rod went through critical testing to determine the precise handle length that provided balance along with incredible leverage to maximize casting potential. One very important component on the casting models is the use of our patented “Double Trigger” reel seats. While this reel seat has been a game changer on our current Tournament Series rods, it’s use on the longer casting rods in the telescopic series has proven to provide industry leading leverage while casting, cranking, setting hooks and in playing big fish. Anglers across America have told us that after fishing our rods with this new reel seat, they simply cannot go back to ancient, single trigger reel seats! Every rod is finished with PacBay Minima guides and incredibly comfortable handles for a lifetime of fishing pleasure.
