Strike King Rage Tail Shad

3" Topwater Shad

The Strike King Rage Tail Shad is a soft plastic shad bait that is typically retrieved across the water's surface much like a buzzbait. The Strike King Rage Tail product line incorporates innovative tail designs in order to achieve maximum swimming action. The Rage Tail Shad was created to provide anglers a more compact topwater plastic buzz bait than those already on the market. In the early stages of product availability, anglers found the new Rage Tail shad had unparalleled tail disturbance with a uniquely loud noise that attracted strikes from all species of predator fish. The bait is easily cast and extremely durable so it can be presented in the heaviest of cover. Consider this a great alternative whenever a situation may call for a soft plastic buzz frog or skinny dipper. Best results are achieved when the bait is fished on the surface with a 4/0 wide gap hook, but many anglers from the southern United States have reported it back on its effectiveness as a swim jig trailer. The bait comes in a pack of 5 and is approximately 3" long. Make sure to stock up on a wide gap screw lock hook such as the Owner Beast hook or Trokar screw lock hook when you purchase the Rage Tail Shad.

Rigging Rage Tail Shad

  1. This design provides the most noise and water movement of any soft plastic top water design ever. It is the soft plastic answer to buzz baits, equal or more aggressive in action, noise and water movement yet it can be fished in areas that buzz baits can’t run successfully because there is no prop to tangle in the grass and moss.

  2. The Rage Shad should be rigged tail upright for best results using a 4/0 EWG Superline hook. Insert the hook point in the nose of the shad and bring out just past the eye on the bottom side. Push the hook completely thru turning it over so that the point of the hook is pointing towards the bottom of the Shad. Leave the eye of the hook slightly exposed in the tip of the nose. Re insert the hook directly beneath the tail and protrude the hook point and barb area completely thru the body of the bait and allow it to lay just beneath the point of the large tail portion, or skin hook the point back into the body for a totally weedless application. Important to keep the bottom of the Shad as flat as possible so that it will plane out on the surface easily and run perfectly true.

  5. You can also use a keel weighted hook for similar top water action and receive further distance in casting and/or wake bait swimming just below the surface.

  6. When using screw lock hooks, you can go up on the hook size up to 5/0 and 6/0 as they allow the hook’s eye to set more forward than a standard 4/0 EWG hook and won‘t stretch out the overall length of the body.

  7. The Rage Shad rigged with a 3/16 to ¼ oz keel weighted hook also makes an excellent compact swim bait design.

  8. Important – Pause a second after the strike to let the line tighten or let the fish load up on the Shad before setting the hook. Many times with top waters on the original strike, the fish will try to cripple the bait then they will quickly turn and eat it. So this slight pause before setting the hook is recommended.

I love these baits! These baits are a great  alternative when you can't throw a buzz bait due to grass or slop. One of my go to Ca delta baits.
