Hot Spot Apex 5.5

The 5.5 Apex is a banana shaped trolling lure designed for a wide variety of trolling applications for both freshwater and saltwater species. The 5.5 Apex, which measures 5.5", from Hot Spot Lures, is one of the most popular trolling lures when targeting big game species such as Salmon, Mackinaw, Walleye Lakers and Pike. The Apex is a very easy lure to use - it can be trolled alone or with a flasher and still achieves the desired action and ultimately the desired results. The 5.5 Apex comes stock rigged up with a 72" of 25lb leader line, 4 bead chain swivel and a 4/0 siwash hook. This 5.5" Apex model is a great choice when trolling for any type of Salmon and it also appeals to by itself or behind a flasher - the suggested trolling speed for the 5.5 model is 2.3 to 3.5mph. Those recommendations, slower than many of the other models, reflects the baits wider body design responsible for the extra-wide swimming action it displays. The Hot Spot Apex 5.5 is 5.5" in length and we offer it in a vast array of color options to suit any fisherman's needs.

Why the Apex Works

Most game fish feed on minnows or small bait fish, as they are attracted by the active darting movements of the bait fish. The dodging and weaving action creates strong vibrations and are immediately attracted to the area. According to the latest research, erratic vibrations like those made by a wounded bait fish are the most enticing. The Apex Lures duplicate the movements of a wounded bait fish. Its contoured-scoop front surface causes a rapid, side-to-side shaking action as it is trolled. The Apex will also dart violently from side to side and will spin from time to time. These actions are highly attractive to fish and no other artificial lure possesses quite the same action as the original Apex trolling lures.

Choosing the Correct Size:

The selection of the correct Apex size is based on the size of the bait fish attacked by your target fish. The Apex size numbers correspond to bait fish inches. For example, trout feeding on small minnows would go after a 1, 1.5 or 3.0 size Apex. Salmon, on the other hand feed on medium anchovies or small herring most accurately represented by the 4.5" or 5.5" size. Lake Trout (Mackinaw) feeding on Kokanee Trout would go after a 6.25" Apex. The Apex maintains its vibrating action at a wide range of speeds; it has a strong shaking and rolling action even at speeds as slow as 1.5 knots. At the other extreme, the Apex can be very successful at speeds as high as four or five knots. Different models are designed to work best within certain speed ranges.

Haven't had a chance to use yet but looks promising. The problem is I wanted the 4.5 size and they were out.

The 5.5 apex in chrome is my favorite down rigger trolling lure.  I’ve caught more King Salmon on this lure than any other.  The more beat up it gets the better it seems to work.  The first one that I bought I fished for three seasons it had so many teeth marks that half the chrome was gone.  It made me cry when a nice king took it to the spawning grounds.  I kid you not it caught at least 30 fish.

Bump up when herring is on the menu, slip a cut hoochie over the rear 1/3 so the tentacles cover the hook if the fish are on squid.
