The Gibbs Delta Tackle Magnum Squid is a 9" soft plastic hoochie/squid bait used for salmon trolling applications. The 9" Squid has a supple rubber like quality and the unique material will not absorb water and has zero buoyancy. These qualities allow the skirt to produces a life like bait fish action when fishing using trolling techniques. One of the most popular uses of the Gibbs Delta Magnum Squid is for Halibut trolling applications.
Over the past few years, anglers have began experimenting with a number of different setups for Halibut trolling. While conventionally, Halibut are taken on a bottom bouncing jig or something of the sort, trolling can be absolutely deadly. Perhaps the most commonly used setup is the 9" Magnum Squid rigged up with a pair of 9/0 or 10/0 Owner SSW cutting point hooks that hold a large piece of herring. The herring is a favorite of Halibut and when smeared with scent, provides the perfect natural scent holder/disperser and just the right size meal. The Gibbs-Delta Tackle 9" Squid keeps the Herring slice in place and serves to reduce the number of small fish trying to steal the bait. The rock fish and other smaller species may still latch on once in a while, but they are typically thwarted by the skirts coverage of the herring chunk.
There are several ways to fish a bait rig for halibut, but most anglers prefer a wire spreader with a cannonball sinker on a dropper at the bottom and a short, monofilament leader from the spreader to the bait. Roughly 18 inches of 60-pound mono between the swivel at the end of the spreader bar and the nose of the plastic squid. The size of the cannonball you’ll need to keep the rig down where it belongs as you bounce it along the bottom vaires, but it might be anywhere between 12 and 48 ounces, maybe more in really deep water. Whenever possible, fish the rig downhill to reduce hang-ups.
We offer the Gibbs-Delta Tackle 9" Giant Squid in several excellent colors. 2pk - unrigged.
