The Sand Flea is a commonly used term for these crustaceans, however, they are more accurately described as a mole crab as they bury themselves into the sand to hide from predators. They are commonly washed around by the surf where they become a favorite meal of the pompano, redfish, sheepshead, and many other species.
The Berkley Gulp Sand Crab/Flea measures 1" in length and comes approximately 24 to a pack. Three colors.
The sand fleas do not get very big - most are around a half inch to an inch long. The females grow up to 2 inches long while the males only grow up to about 3/4 inches long. Mole Crabs have five sets of "legs" on their underbelly. They are used primarily to paddle through the water and to dig into the soft sand. One characteristic of a Mole Crab is that they always travel backwards. They can walk on wet sand to get back to the water, but if they are put in dry sand, they usually will not move. They have no claws as most crabs have.
