AFTCO Fishing

Since 1958, The American Fishing Tackle Company, AFTCO, has had one goal: produce quality offshore fishing tackle and premium fishing gear. What started more than 50 years ago in a pioneer's Newport Beach basement, turned machine shop, is now driven forward by a devoted group of Southern Californian saltwater fishing enthusiasts. As sport fishing has progressed, so have our products. Our line of saltwater fishing gear, with the cornerstone AFTCO roller guides and durable saltwater fishing shorts, has evolved into a complete line of saltwater fishing tackle and clothing. In addition to AFTCO's own line of offshore fishing equipment, AFTCO is the manufacturer of all Al Agnew and Guy Harvey shirts & apparel. With equal parts passion for deep sea fishing and concern for our ocean resources, the AFTCO and Guy Harvey clothing lines donate more than $350,000 each year to ocean conservation and fishing issues. From our big game fishing tackle to our performance offshore gear and clothing, AFTCO has long been both a foundation and a source of innovation for the fishing community.

AFTCO stands for the American Fishing Tackle Company and was established in 1958 in Newport Beach, California by J.C. Axelson, a pioneer in big game tackle development. In 1973, Milt Shedd (a legendary innovator, himself) and wife Peggie purchased AFTCO, and a new company evolved with a concern for both the fishing customer and marine resources. In 1974, son Bill Shedd joined the company, and in 1989 he started the AFTCO Clothing Division, with the introduction of what became the world's finest fishing shorts. In 1999, AFTCO began a relationship with Guy Harvey by manufacturing and distributing "all over print" shirts incorporating Guy's art. Then, in 2004, Guy officially partnered with AFTCO for the manufacture and distribution of all Guy Harvey sportswear, including the immensely popular Guy Harvey T-Shirts. In 2007, AFTCO partnered with world famous wildlife artist, Al Agnew, to produce and distribute a line of clothing for the fresh water angler and those who appreciate inland game and wildlife.

For more than 50 years, the AFTCO name has stood for quality and dependability, backed by a family-owned company that ranks among the world's most highly regarded saltwater fishing tackle manufacturers.AFTCO Roller Guides and Roller Tops, Unibutts®, Taper Tip Gaffs, Roller Troller® Outrigger Clips, Fighting Belts and Harnesses, Fishing Gloves and more, are found on top sport fishing boats worldwide.

That long earned reputation now applies to AFTCO Clothing. Their M01 and M01L shorts are known worldwide for their ability to hold up and clean up in the most extreme fishing conditions. AFTCO board shorts offer not only the functionality demanded by the serious angler, but also the "California Cool" factor that younger anglers are looking for. The AFTCO Clothing focus is on performance. Features on their fishing shirts, pants, jackets, sandals, gloves, sun masks, hats and even underwear, will make that focus obvious after just one trip on the boat wearing AFTCO. AFTCO's conservation ethic is real and not just a marketing ploy, as is so common in today's business world. It evolved through former company Chairman, Milt Shedd's longtime involvement in ocean resource projects. Milt, the founding Board Chairman of Sea-World, Inc., passed in 2002, but his marine stewardship tradition is carried on by the staff of AFTCO. Bill Shedd, company President and CEO, contributes well over 500 hours a year providing leadership for the sportfishing community and ocean conservation efforts.

AFTCO x Guy Harvey

Famed marine life artist Guy Harvey has teamed up with AFTCO Bluewater to create and proudly offer a unique line of coastal lifestyle sportswear, as presented on this website. Paramount is Guy's immensely popular and always expanding T-Shirt line - featuring his amazingly detailed and colorful marine life images. Also continuing to expand is a wide range of sportswear for men, women and children, including multiple shirt styles, shorts and swimwear, jackets, fleece sweatshirts, hats and visors, belts, footwear, and even stunning sport towels- all featuring the trademark Guy Harvey by AFTCO Bluewater logo on labels and hang tags.

Guy Harvey is a unique blend of artist, scientist, diver, angler, conservationist and explorer, fiercely devoted to his family and his love of the sea. His childhood passion for the ocean and its living creatures not only inspired him to draw, but fueled a burning interest that prompted a formal education in marine science. Having graduated with honors in Marine Biology from Aberdeen University in Scotland in 1977, Guy returned home to Jamaica to resume his education, earning his Ph.D. from the University of the West Indies in 1984. Though he gave up a budding career as a marine biologist for that of a highly acclaimed artist, Guy has continued his relentless pursuit to unravel the mysteries of the sea, traveling the world to better understand the habits and habitats of the marine wildlife he paints. Along the way, Guy became an ardent conservationist, supporting "catch-and- release" fishing ethics, collaborating with Nova Southeastern University in Dania Beach, FL, to form the Guy Harvey Research Institute, and working with many organizations to help manage and protect fishery resources around the world. Guy is an avid scuba diver and over the years has become a skilled underwater photographer and cinematographer, even pioneering the techniques used to photograph and film free swimming billfish. From Central and South America to Mexico’s Magdalena Bay, to such far-reaching locales as the Portuguese island of Madeira and Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, Guy’s personal observations from his diving expeditions have helped him capture, with his brush, the kind of detail his paintings are famous for. In addition, Guy’s talent as a cinematographer has allowed him to share his observations through the production of educational documentaries — plus his hit television series "Guy Harvey’s Portraits From The Deep."
