Medlock Double Weedguard Jig

Double Weedguard Bass Jig

The Medlock Jig is a high quality bass fishing jig featuring a double weedguard configuration. The Medlock Jig was created by a father and son duo who needed to find a more weedless approach to flipping and punching big jigs through the heavy grass mats presented by Lake Okeechobee. After years of development they finally created a winner; literally. Brandon Medlock, the younger of the duo, won two major tournaments within a years time and tallied numerous top 10 finishes as a direct result of employing his father's double weedguard design. Without skipping a beat, the jig became the hottest bait in Florida and was the key to many of the Elite Series anglers' success at the Lake Okeechobee Bassmaster event. The double weedguard affords anglers the ability to place a big, bulky bait in cover that would otherwise be impenetrable by other lures. The jig can be flipped, pitched, punched or swam with a high frequency of weedlessness throughout the retrieve. The jig is built around a stout Gamakatsu 6/0 heavy flipping hook (3/8oz size has a 3/0 hook) and finished off with a StarFlash skirt material. The dual weedguards jigs have proven effective in and around heavy matted vegetation. Although the design may in fact increase weedlessness, the real advantageous aspect of the jig has been its ability to deliver solid hook penetration where other jigs and Texas Rigged plastics have failed. The explanation for this style jig's effectiveness lies in the unrestricted hook point which fall in between the two weedguards upon the hook set leaving a clear path to the fish's jaw. Additionally, the dual weedguards position the hook off the bottom - when the jig is never able to completely lie sideways when at rest. Due to the strong hook and the heavy vegetation in which it will be fished, its best to use 65-80lb braided line and a extra-heavy flipping stick for all applications of this jig. The Medlock Jig comes in four sizes: 3/8, 1/2, 3/4 and 1oz.

Check out Advanced Angler's Review of the Medlock Double Weedguard Jig. It's been a proven bait for a number of Florida anglers for many years now. Recently, anglers fishing the Potomac River, CA Delta, and Lake Eufala have experienced similar results. Certainly, there's something to the double weedguard design.

Fishing The Medlock Jig

Joe Medlock, creator of the Medlock Jig, suggests using 65-pound-test braided line, and he reports often using 80-pound-test braid. He also recommends using the heaviest rod; he uses an 8 XXHeavy Carrot Stix Flipping Stick because of what the battle entails. gThis is not a finesse eem out kind of technique,h he said. gYou have to set the hook and get them out of the cover as fast as you can, otherwise they can wrap you up and youfll either lose them, or have to go in and get them.h

Brandon Medlock, son of Joe and local Florida stick, said that the lure is best used as a reaction bait. gI tend to start with just Flipping it into the cover and letting it fall,h he said. gIf I donft get a bite on the initial drop, I start with pulling it out and making the next flip. If they donft prove to be biting on the initial drop, Ifll start playing with shaking it, or hopping it a little.h

What Trailer?

We have received a number of questions regarding the best trailer to use with the Medlock jigs. More often than not, the best choice will be the plastic you prefer for any of your standard jig trailers, but there are a few plastics which anglers have reported success with:

  • Missile Baits D Bomb - Ish Monroe won the 2012 Bassmaster Elite Series event on Lake Okeechobee using this bait. Missiles Bruiser color D-Bomb remains one of the most popular pairings for the jig to date.
  • Zoom Z Hog - The bulky Z-Hog offers a slower fall than other trailers and has therefore been another popular choice.
  • Keitech 4" Swing Impact - The combination has been deadly for anglers seeking to mimic bluegill. Pair up the colors to match or provide contrast. Best results have come when big bass are post spawn and feeding on bluegill under matted vegetation.

Medlock double weedguard jig December 25, 2013
Reviewer: charles petit at 870 431 4449 for best colors on b
Can be used on slightly flooded shorelines with brush sticks in about 2' - 4'  of water on Ozark ( Missouri and Arkansas ) lakes.   Cast the medlock  on to shoreline's  flat rocks, ( about up 6" from shoreline ) in order to not splash the water ),  using the 1. Oz.  ( or 3/4 oz. ) double weedguard jig.   Then slowly pull the jig into the lake's bottom working it like a crawfish. Start and stop action.                When the line reaches a stick's horizontal branch,  snap the heavy line just enough to  move the branch downward to release the line.  Then with the again horizontal line,  continue to work the jig like a crawfish again.
The heavy 1 oz jig helps to lower the branch for the line's release.
The heavy jig can be used deep flats and points also.
Enperiment with different trailers.

Medlock Jig May 7, 2013
Reviewer: Gary Thompson from Deltona, Florida
This is a Big Bass lure. It's able to punch through the thickest mats AND be retrieved without hanging up! I quit using other jigs. I do wish it had a baitkeeper, so we wouldn't have to make our own. Great in the Central St. Johns River system and a killer at our annual 2 day tournament at Istokpoga this April. 22 teams.11 fish over 22" and most on Medlocks.
